Recent Highlights and Upcoming Expeditions [top]

• May 2007: Collaborated with Iñupiat whalers and Elders in Barrow, Alaska, to assess local sea ice conditions as part of the Siku-Inuit-Hila (Ice, people, and weather) project.
• April 2007: Completed field work in Qaanaaq, Greenland, to support Siku-Inuit-Hila project. This cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of the dynamic relationship between humans and sea ice will document evidence of environmental change and the impacts upon Arctic coastal communities.

Upcoming Expeditions
Mahoney will conduct fieldwork in Clyde River on Baffin Island, Nunavut, during Spring 2008 to support the Siku-Inuit-Hila (Ice, people, and weather) project.

Current Research [top]

• Constructing a time series of Arctic sea ice variability from as far back as 1933 through an analysis of historic Russian sea ice charts.
• Participating in Siku-Inuit-Hila, a project that relies heavily on ongoing field observations and interviews to compare the relationship between humans and sea ice in different Arctic communities and assess changes in the sea ice environment and the way in which it is used.
