- October 2007: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was named to receive the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, along with former Vice President Al Gore. Barry contributed to the most recent IPCC report, Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis, serving as a review editor for Chapter 4, "Observations: Changes in snow, ice and frozen ground."
- June 2007: Awarded the Founder's Medal—one of two gold medals awarded annually— by the Royal Geographical Society, London, in recognition of his excellence in geographical research, fieldwork, teaching, and public engagement.
- March 2007: Awarded the first Francois Emile Matthes Award, recognizing his accomplishments in the field of cryospheric science
- February 2007: Served as review editor for Chapter 4, "Observations: Changes in Snow, Ice, and Frozen Ground," in the IPCC report, Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis
- September 2006: Awarded the Goldthwait Polar Medal in recognition of his contributions to polar research.
- February 2006: Received the award for Best Book of 2005 from the Atmospheric Science Librarians International (ASLI) for the book The Arctic Climate System
