Lake Ice Pileup

These two photos show lake ice pileup that occurred on the shores of Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, in the spring of 2001. Lake ice pileup occurs each spring during periods of ice break up, but when certain wind conditions coincide with the break up, large mounds of ice can result. In the first photo, the ice pileup is covering a dock. While impressive, this amount of ice pileup can also be destructive, knocking over trees and destroying docks and homes along the shore.
