Unable to Connect to Database

The GISMO interface is unable to connect to the database due to one of several reasons:

  1. The database is down. NSIDC will always check the database; however, it is unlikely to be down.

  2. Your plugin is outdated. Some users have found that older versions of the Java plugin may not handle the database connectivity correctly. Upgrading to the most recent version of the plugin may help.

  3. Your computer is behind a firewall or it may be using a proxy server that will not allow your browser to connect to the database port. Consequently, the database appears to be down because you cannot connect. If this is the case, there is nothing we can do on our end. Please consult your systems administrator to allow connections to a non-standard port.
Note: As of 24 August, 2005 the database port has changed from bipolar.colorado.edu:4100 to bipolar.colorado.edu:5000. If you are using a firewall, and GISMO has recently stopped working, you may need to reconfigure your firewall to allow for the new port number.

Proxies:

GISMO users with a proxy server should note that scripts are not sufficient for configuring the proxy settings in a browser. If you use a proxy server and have "Automatic proxy configuration" checked in your browser, you should probably uncheck that and configure your proxy settings manually. Talk to your systems administrator to find out what the correct settings are.

You may also need to configure the proxy settings for the Java plugin manually. For Windows machines, the plugin control panel is part of the "Programs" menu. For Unix platforms, the panel is usually in the javaplugin/java subdirectory wherever the Netscape executable resides.
