International Geophysical Year (IGY) Glacier Photographs

NSIDC holds a collection of IGY glacier photographs in our Analog Archives.  More than 900 have been digitized with support from NOAA’s Climate Data Modernization Program (CDMP) and are available in the NOAA at NSIDC program’s Glacier Photograph Collection.

Glaciology was one of the primary research areas studied over the course of the IGY.  By the time of the IGY, it had long been recognized that changes in the morphology of glaciers could be recorded using repeat photography over an extended period of time.  Moreover, systematic changes in the morphology of ensembles of glaciers could be an indicator of long-term climate change.  Glacier photographs had been obtained by William O. Field and other photographers on previous excursions to Alaska. The IGY was an opportunity for Field and other photographers to continue their glaciological research of previously studied glaciers as well as to take baseline observations of previously unstudied glaciers. The team made three trips to Alaska (1957, 1958, 1959) to photograph glaciers.

IPY Publications Database available online

The International Polar Year Publications Database (IPYPD) will attempt to identify and describe all publications that result from, or that are about, the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 and the three previous IPYs. The IPYPD is part of the IPY Data and Information Service (IPYDIS).

IPY Begins March 1

DAHLI is one of hundreds of international organizations participating in the International Polar Year (IPY).
